mbracing my natural hair inside and outside of the office has been quite the journey. But for some reason embracing natural coils in a professional setting has felt the most daunting over the years. Who can relate to stares, questions, unwelcomed touches, driven by curiosity and ignorance about natural hair all while in a professional space?
And the most unusual thing about experiencing unwanted attention to your hair at work is that a lot of times these circumstances go unspoken about. This discomfort and awkwardness that is experienced when someone violates your personal space a lot of times gets swept under the rug. I’m not sure if people aim to keep it PC, or what? Maybe people feel that saying nothing extinguishes the discomfort. However, saying or doing nothing in some cases leaves an open invite for the behavior to persist.

So in 2017, when I was searching for ways to find comfort in my own hair journey as I was beginning my professional career, I decided to create a space where other professionals with natural hair could turn to. A space that in my mind didn’t exist at the time. And with that, I began my journey of learning how to embrace the natural texture of my own hair regardless of what space I am in .
What I learned along this journey is that I got to a point where I did not want to succumb to making others feel comfortable by me ____ my hair to fit society’s “standard of beauty.” I really wanted to help create a lane of beauty that was “uncommon” in professional settings. I wanted to help shape the narrative of natural hair in the workplace and to approach talking about uncomfortable situations and what’s okay to do and not okay to do in the office.
